The Bosome Freho District Assembly in the Ashanti Region has launched an initiative to enhance environmental sanitation by inaugurating 100 street sweepers under its new Street Sweeping Programme on 25th June, 2026. This move comes in direct response to a directive from the President of the country, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, who urged all Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to bolster their sanitation management efforts following the government’s decision not to renew the national sanitation contract with Zoomlion Ghana Limited.
During the inauguration ceremony, The District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Charles Appiah-Kubi, highlighted the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring the effectiveness of this new program. A key aspect of this commitment is the provision of an improved remuneration of GH¢500 for each of the 100 sweepers , a substantial increase compared to the GH¢150 they received under the previous arrangement with Zoomlion. The DCE emphasized that this increased allowance is intended to motivate the sweepers and reflects the assembly’s dedication to enhancing the welfare of its sanitation workers. He also hinted at the possibility of further upward review of the allowance based on the workers’ commitment and performance.
The DCE further urged the newly appointed street sweepers to be dedicated to their work and to remain apolitical, stressing that sanitation is a shared responsibility crucial for public health and general cleanliness. The District Coordinating Director (DCD), Michael Adjei (Esq), adding his voice to the gathering issued a stern warning against absenteeism, stating that supervisors would closely monitor the sweepers’ activities to ensure accountability. He made it clear that any sweeper absent for three consecutive days without a valid excuse would face dismissal, emphasizing the Assembly’s resolve to prevent the mismanagement of public funds. The newly recruited sweepers expressed their sincere gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to work diligently to achieve a cleaner Bosome Freho.
