The Bosome Freho District Assembly in the Ashanti Region gave start-up kits, like fufu pounding machines, refrigerators, deep freezers, wheelchairs and cocoa spraying machines, to 39 people with disabilities to support their livelihoods. This initiative, funded by the Persons with Disabilities Common Fund, aims to improve their livelihoods and reduce street begging. The District Chief Executive emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting PWDs and eliminating stigma.
The District Chief Executive, Mr. Charles Appiah Kubi advised the recipients to utilize the equipment effectively and warned them against selling it, emphasizing its purpose in creating lasting businesses.
Mr. Frank Konadu Asare, the Bosome Freho District Director for Social Welfare and Community Development, explained that the boost in the PWD Common Fund from 3% to 5% allows them to assist more PWDs each year. He noted that previously, they could only assist around 20 individuals annually, but with the increase, they can now support almost 40. He praised the government for this positive change.
The District Disability Fund Coordinator, Michael Adjei (ESQ), said the Assembly’s support extend far above providing start-up kits.
He emphasized that the Assembly also provides assistance for PWDs with medical expenses, educational fees and other expenses to improve their livelihood.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude towards the central government and district assembly and pledged to use the items for their intended purposes to improve their quality of life.
