The Information Services Department (ISD) of the Bosome Freho District Assembly has commenced an intensive public education campaign on Government’s Free Primary Health Care (FPHC) programme.
The campaign, led by the District Information Officer, Mr. Seth Hudson Amponsah, is targeting over 90 communities across the district.
Mr. Amponsah said the exercise is to ensure residents fully understand the policy and take advantage of it. The Free Primary Health Care programme was launched by President John Dramani Mahama in April 2026 to promote Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
He explained that ISD officers have been deployed to churches, mosques, schools, and market places identified as major convergence points to carry out the education.
He added that Community Information Centres (CICs) across the district are also being heavily used to broadcast the message in local languages to reach remote and lakeside communities.
According to Mr. Amponsah, residents are being educated that primary healthcare services at CHPS compounds, Health Centres and Polyclinics are now free for all Ghanaians, whether they hold a valid NHIS card or not.
He said residents only need a Ghana Card.
He noted that as part of the programme, health workers and trained community volunteers will also undertake house-to-house visits to conduct screening for hypertension, diabetes and other non-communicable diseases.
Mr. Amponsah however clarified that the free service does not cover District, Regional and Teaching Hospitals, where NHIS will still be required for referrals.
He therefore urged residents to visit the nearest primary health facility for early checks and not wait until their conditions become severe.
Some residents who have been engaged expressed appreciation to Government, saying the initiative will greatly reduce the financial burden of accessing basic healthcare.
