RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES INITIATIVES GHANA

Leading the Girls’ Empowerment Agenda in the Bosome Freho District

Project Overview
Rights and Responsibilities Initiatives Ghana (RRIG) has been working in the Bosome Freho District since January 2021 under the SHE Leads project. This project focuses on developing leadership among girls and young women across the socio-cultural, institutional, and civil society domains. It aims to empower girls by building their leadership capacity, promoting gender equality, and encouraging active participation in decision-making at all levels.

Project Activities and Achievements
During the period under review, RRIG implemented several key interventions to equip in-school and out-of-school girls with skills. These skills were assertiveness, economic empowerment, and a positive attitude. The goal was to prepare the girls for meaningful participation in the workforce, professions, vocations, and personal relationships. The training and capacity building is to enable the girls to occupy leadership positions and participate in areas that impact society.

Stakeholders
RRIG’s success in the Bosome Freho District has been made possible with the support of selected members of the local government system. These are:

  • Duty bearers
  • Assembly members
  • Unit committee members
  • Opinion leaders
  • Heads of trade associations
  • Health and education sector representatives
  • School Children
  • Girls and young women
  • Boys group

This has helped achieve the project objectives and its sustainability. By working with these stakeholders RRIG has created an environment of collaboration and understanding which has expanded the project’s reach.

Capacity Building on Legal Frameworks
RRIG has educated five Hindered and sixty-four (564) individuals on the legal frameworks, laws, and policies in Ghana that protect and promote the girl child. These were girls, community leaders, and other stakeholders. The legal documents covered during this training were:

  1. Children’s Act 1998, Act 560
  2. Domestic Violence Act 2007, Act 732
  3. Return to School Policy (GES, 2018)
  4. Prevention of Sexual Exploitation by Actors (PSEA)
  5. Cyber Security Act 2020, Act 1038
  6. Ghana Against Child Abuse (GACA)
  7. Girls Club Manual (Plan Ghana)

The training ensured that girls and community members know their rights and the protection available to them under Ghanaian law. It also emphasized prevention of abuse and exploitation.

International Day of the Girl Child 2024
RRIG celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child 2024 with the theme “Girls’ Vision for the Future.” The event, held at the Presbyterian Basic School in Asiwa, focused on empowering girls to see themselves in the future. It brought together young girls, community leaders, and key stakeholders to discuss and reflect on the progress made in promoting girls’ rights and leadership in the district.

Conclusion
RRIG remains committed to advancing the girls’ empowerment agenda in the Bosome Freho District through targeted interventions, capacity building, and active collaboration with stakeholders. The SHE Leads project continues to make significant strides in ensuring girls and young women are empowered to lead, thrive, and positively
