CELEBRATION OF INTERNATIONAL GIRL CHILD DAY

INTRODUCTION

The International Day of the Girl Child is an International observance day declared by the United Nations. It is also called the Day of Girls and the International Day of the Girl. Under the guidance of Executive Director Aba Oppong, the Bosome Freho Chapter of Rights and Responsibilities Initiatives Ghana (RRIG) held the district edition at Asiwa Presbyterian Basic School on Tuesday, October 15, 2024. The occasion’s theme was “Girls Vision for the Future.”

PROGRAMME

In her speech, Mrs. Aba Oppong said the celebration makes available more opportunities for girls and increases awareness of gender inequality faced by girls all over the world based on their Gender roles.

The inequality includes areas such as unequal access to education, nutrition, legal rights, medical care and protection from stigmatization and discrimination, violence against women, teenage pregnancy, and school drop- out. In Ghana, there are legislation to promote girls successful careers. The legislation and policies include:

  1. Children’s Act 1998, Act 560
  2. Domestic Violence Act 2007, Act 732
  3. Return to School Policy GES 2018
  4. Prevention of Sexual Exploitation by Actors (PSEA) poster by Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection
  5. Cyber Security Act 2020 Act 1038
  6. Ghana Against Child Abuse (GACA)
  7. Girls Club Manual (Plan Ghana)

Mrs. Aba Oppong reiterated that the day is also used to celebrate successful Girls and Women who have overcome gender discrimination and are trailblazers in the fields of medicine, science, research, education, development policy, politics, and development education. She extended the best wishes to girls across Bosome Freho, Ashanti, Ghana, and the world in celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child 2024.

CONCLUSION

In her conclusion, Aba Oppong expressed hope that the girls would achieve their heart’s desires through hard work and mutual respect. She also wished that the laws, policies, and legal frameworks enacted in the country would protect them from teenage pregnancy. Additionally, she encouraged the girls to fully participate as active citizens in every situation and to uplift other girls along their successful journeys. She ended with the words, “Long live Asiwa Presby! Long live Bosome Freho! Long live Ghana!”
